Consett Town

THE Germans came to Consett town where conditions were ideal with Derwent Water and Durham coal to make their swords of steel.Man and boy they came men of Consett true to roll the steel and learn a trade and make a bob or two. In a red dust shroud they worked so hard from day to day so when Friday came they weren't ashamed to collect their weekly pay. And then it came, that fatal day when Maggie played her hand it had to go, with all its jobs did she really understand? And so five thousand men or more were placed upon the dole they lost their jobs and weekly pay and their self-respect she stole. But Consett lives, and to this day the folks are strong and true with true North grit, they are close-knit and never turn their backs on you.

Chorus: The steeltown blues are calling wherever I may roam the steeltown blues are calling calling me back home to hear the curlew's plaintive cry among your hills and crags and watch the skylark whirling high to perform his zigs and zags.
